Good morning and welcome to today’s stop on the “Solstice” book tour! I’m honored to have with me today Mr. Bryan W. Dull to talk about himself, his writing, and of course, his newest book. I had the pleasure of interviewing him, and some of his answers . Here’s a bit about him and what he had to say.
Currently living in Cincinnati, OH with his wife and daughter, Bryan W. Dull goes leaps and bounds to get away from the norm and be his own person; with himself and his writing. Since middle school he has always known what he was good at; entertaining and telling stories. He has been consistently writing and coming up with plots for the last twenty years, but just recently decided to share one with the world. His first novel, “Solstice” is a vampire book inspired by his daughter and noir literature. Born in Anderson, IN, Bryan has also lived in Ohio, Florida, North Carolina and South Carolina (where “Solstice” is based).
Being a lover of all things art and pop culture “nerdism”; his interests lie in film, television, comics, games, anime, and books. For a short while, Bryan dabbled in voice acting work only to shift his focus to his family and writing. His favorite authors include; Chuck Palahniuk, Robert Kirkman, Clive Barker, Ernest Cline, and Neil Gaiman.
SHR: Let’s start with a few personal questions. Give me the first thing that comes to mind on each. Favorite author?
BWD: Chuck Palahniuk
SHR: Favorite book?
BWD: The Thief of Always
SHR: Favorite movie?
BWD: Ghostbusters
SHR: Best daydream ever?
BWD: Having a big office on the second story, watching the snow fall outside.
SHR: What’s worse for you: a bad amazon review, or a bad review from a fellow author?
BWD: I would say from another author.
SHR: Great! Now, let’s talk about your writing. Do you write under your real name or a pen name?
BWD: I use my real name. I like to see my name in print…I’m narcissistic like that.
SHR: Good answer. As writers I think we’re all a bit narcissistic, so you’re in good company. Next, tell us about your most recent work and where we can get it.
BWD: “Solstice” is a vampire story set in modern day South Carolina where a ‘vampire hunter’ meets a young half breed child vampire and decides to protect her in exchange for information. I’ll leave it there for right now. You can get it on Amazon and soon through other retailers.
SHR: As a South Carolina girl, I’m definitely interested now! It also sounds like the type of book that spans several genres. Speaking of, wow many genres do you write in?
BWD: Horror, Thriller as of right now. I will probably get more into sci-fi at some point.
SHR: Very cool. Now give us your opinion: Editors – are they friends or enemies?
BWD: Depends. I think most mean well, but then they get high and mighty and like make lists of what you did wrong in their eyes. I also love it when they don’t like a word, they want you to change it because of their personal preference.
SHR: When writing a book, what comes first for you: the plot, the characters, or the setting?
BWD: The plot.
SHR: And once you have that plot and begin to write, who takes control, you or your characters?
BWD: That depends on the story. Initially, I was, but now that I am writing the sequel, the characters are taking over.
SHR: What about audio or visual stimulation? Do you write with or without it?
BWD: With. I have to listen to music to keep my hands typing. Movie trailer music inspires me.
SHR: Imagine you’re having a bad dream. If you were told you could never write again, what would you do to fill your time?
BWD: Trying to get back into voice acting work.
SHR: Last but not least, what’s next for you as an author?
BWD: The sequel to “Solstice”, titled “Equinox”. After that I will continue working on “Retail”. Maybe both will be out this year.
SHR: Finally, let’s move on to a few completely random questions. For example, What’s the weather like where you are today?
BWD: Freaking cold!
SHR: Let’s test your TV knowledge next. If you had to compare yourself to one of the Golden Girls, which one would you be most like and why?
BWD: Dorothy…I think my humor best fits with her. I also can get a little snarky sometimes.
SHR: Good answer. My friends compare me to Sophia. We should play cards sometime. Now, if the apocalypse happened tomorrow, how would you react?
BWD: Well….it was bound to happen at some point.
SHR: Another stumper… tell us how you really feel about the 50 Shades of Gray hype.
BWD: I hate it personally, I don’t get the hype. I am not a fan of Twilight anyway but making a fan fiction of it and then just changing the names seems wrong in some way. Maybe that is what bothers me about it. I would feel the same way if there was an erotic tale about wizards at a college and it originally started as a Harry Potter slash fiction.
SHR: You’re definitely not alone in that belief. And now, something lighthearted for the end of the day (and be honest!), which are better: Boxers or Briefs?
BWD: Briefs, but I wear the combo ones.
